Unlike most other shows on air, reality TV is created to entertain as opposed to inform. Its a genre that usually follows unscripted real life situations, usually not casting professional actors and rather everyday people.
Part of most peoples everyday lives, reality TV is especially targeted towards teens and younger adults, due to the fact its a good distraction from stress due to exams and transitioning into adult life.
Not only that, but reality TV draws people in. Viewers will return each day or week to watch the drama continue. They usually present celebrities or people living high class lives, this allows an escape for people who are more likely to be working & middle class. Majority of the time they also feature competition-like elements and loss, poor result or by customer voting systems, results in the cast members reducing in numbers each week.

Since the 1990s, reality TV has been a well loved type of television. It peaked in the early 2000s when shows like American Idol, The survivor and Big Brother were the center of attention on TV.
Although there were earlier examples of reality television dating all the way back to 1940.

There are multiple subgenres of reality TV. Soap-opera based reality TV is one of the most common types. Including shows like The Only way is Essex, Keeping up with the Kardashians and also the multiple Housewife shows. Often the most drama packed out of any of the subgenres, these "docusoaps" claim to be unscripted, they usually receive a lot of controversy and are often accused of being set up.
Likewise, a lot of hidden camera and paranormal shows receive a similar judgement for being fixed.

Professional Activities, Reality Tv shows that show professionals going about their day to day business, examples include Cant pay? We'll take it away, Top Model shows and Tattoo fixers. Court shows also fall under this subgenre.
Similarly, the financial transitions style, like antiques roadshow, present professional salesmen and buyers haggle over unique, vintage or rare items.

Another example, is investments, shows like Dragons Den, The apprentice wherein a selection of candidates get to present their entrepreneurial ventures to please the selection of successful business owners.

If you're a fan of I'm a celebrity get me out of here, X Factor or Britain's got talent then you're probably more than familiar with the completion based reality TV shows. Which can include dating, playing for money and various other prizes. The contestants can be either celebrities or ordinary people. However, if the show chooses to cast celebrities they are often paid for just appearing or asked to donate their winnings to a charity.

But one of the most widely recognised is the makeover and business renovation. Usually showing a person or group of people improving their lives. Some of the most common topics include weight loss, style and grooming or home-life transformation. Botched, Supernanny, Extreme makeover or Hoarders are some of the most watched in the USA. These type are often so well liked due to the idea of a perfect body or lifestyle standard most people try to hold themselves to.
These shows can also show the renovation of businesses, one of the most successful examples is Gordon Ramsays' Kitchen Nightmares, so liked in the UK that they created an American counterpart.
